Recalling the mistakes I made during my first renovation, and looking at the messy pile of shoes at the door, I really wanted to go back in time and slap myself twice.
With an object like the entrance hall, before it is renovated, you will feel that it doesn't matter whether you have it or not, and you may even dislike it because it is inconvenient and takes up a certain amount of space. However, it is only after you actually live in that you realize this situation. The messy appearance that appears every day when you return home is really very energy-consuming.
So this time I will do it well even if I am beaten to death.
Don't be in a hurry to build a wall, first think about what you want to do when you get home
Many people asked the designer at the beginning: "How to make partitions for the entrance?" In fact, the order is wrong. You should first ask yourself: "What on earth do I do in the 30 seconds when I come home and step into the door every day?".
The act of taking out the key (now turned into a smart fingerprint lock), putting away the bag, changing shoes, hanging up the coat, and putting down the groceries purchased...don't these actions look like a war? If there is no place to put it, the bag will be thrown on the sofa, the coat will be thrown on the back of the dining room chair, and the keys will be thrown away. It will take a long time to look for it the next day.
Glass bricks are really a savior for poor lighting
The layout of my house is a very typical "straight to the point" situation, and there is no entrance hall, so you can see through the living room at a glance. The original plan was to build a solid wall, but if we did that, the area at the door would completely turn into a black hole.
After searching through a large number of pictures, I found that the glass brick mentioned above is truly a magical thing. It is not the kind of glass that is transparent, but has a hazy color. It can transmit light but does not have a see-through function. Building a wall with only half the height not only has the intention of partitioning, but also can bring in the light in the living room.
In the afternoon, the sunlight passes through the glass bricks and casts mottled light and shadow on the ground. At that moment, you will have such a feeling that your home does have warmth.
The bottom of the shoe cabinet must be suspended + two layers
This is a lesson I learned from my mother's house. Her shoe cabinet is floor-standing. Every time I go to change shoes, I have to open the door of the cabinet. Since I am lazy, I kick it directly towards the outside of the cabinet, so that the door always looks like a shoe stall.
This time I insisted on making it suspended and left two layers .
The layer above that, with a height of about 15 centimeters, is specially used to place the shoes that have just been replaced and will be worn tomorrow, so that there is no need to put them in the cabinet. The bottom layer is about 25 centimeters high, so what should be placed there? Place dirty shoes, rain boots that have come back from going out, or shoes that have just stepped on the muddy ground, so that they will not pollute the so-called "clean area" above. This layered design is really very practical and is highly recommended to everyone.
Sensor light, knows better than your husband to wait for you to come home
In fact, this thing is no longer considered a black technology, but it really improves happiness. In the past, when I worked overtime until very late, I entered the house in the dark and had to free one hand to fumble for the switch on the wall. It was quite embarrassing in that moment.
As soon as the door opened, the light strip placed on the top of the entrance slowly turned on, and the light at the bottom of the shoe cabinet also slowly turned on, showing the warm yellow light of 3000K. This light shines upward from below without dazzling the eyes, giving people the feeling as if someone is saying "Come back".
Moreover, the light at the bottom of the shoe cabinet can also illuminate the floor, so you don’t have to bend down to look closer when changing shoes.
About that "one-button power-off" switch
The design caused considerable controversy. Some people said it was tasteless, while others said the experience was very enjoyable. I have installed it at home, and my feeling is: for those patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder who have reached an advanced stage, this can be regarded as a life-saving straw.
Before going out, click "pop" to turn off all lights, TVs and air conditioners in the house, except for electrical appliances such as refrigerators that must be powered on. No more walking downstairs wondering, “Did I turn off the light?” There’s no need to run back and forth between several rooms to turn off the lights just to save money on your energy bill.
However, there is something to be reminded here. If there are devices in your home that need to be powered on for a long time, such as routers and monitoring equipment, you must remember to lay a separate line, and do not let them be disconnected at the same time.
There should be a hanging area for clothes, even if it is only 30 centimeters
This is my first time renovating, and I wish I could make the entire space into a storage style with closed cupboard doors. So what is the result? There is no place to hang the coats you wear when you enter the house. They can only be piled on the sofa, on the chairs, and on the bed. Everywhere in the house seems to have become a cloakroom.
This time, even if I sacrifice a little storage space, I still have to leave a place for hanging dirty clothes on the side of the entrance cabinet or in an open area.
The height must reach a certain standard so that long coats can be hung. Leave a blank space below for a dirty clothes basket and make a few hooks above for hanging hats and scarves. Don’t underestimate these tens of centimeters of space. This will free up the sofa at home.
Movable floors leave some room for the future
Do you think the current height of shoes will be the eternal height? It is so naive to think so. The boots worn by girls are available in long-tube styles and short-tube styles. Basketball shoes worn by boys and dad shoes have different heights.
If the shelf is in a fixed state, you will not be able to put high-top shoes in later. You can only choose to remove the board or insert it diagonally, but the cabinet door will not close.
So it is absolutely necessary to have movable floors! A hole is drilled almost every two or three centimeters and can be adjusted as desired. Some areas can even be turned into rotating shoe racks, so you don’t need to pull everything out when you want to access the shoes inside.
Those seemingly inconspicuous “breathing holes”
Few people mention this detail, but I have to talk about it. The shoe cabinet has been closed for a long time. Once you open it, you will immediately smell the extremely pungent and disgusting smell. It is really indescribable!
The solution is not complicated: either make louvers on the cabinet door, or leave ventilation holes in the back panel. Another approach is to set the laminate back two centimeters, leaving a gap to allow air to circulate. You can even buy a shoe cabinet companion with ultraviolet sterilization and drying functions and embed it in. Even on rainy days, you don’t have to worry about shoes getting damp and moldy.
After all, the entrance hall is not only for others to see, but also for your own use.
Some people say that the entrance hall is like "face" to the home. I think this is wrong. Face is used to show off to others, but the entrance is a place where you can take off your armor. Design it to be more comfortable, so that the moment you open the door, you can truly feel like "coming home".
One last word, don’t copy other people’s homes. Comprehensively consider the points I mentioned based on your own living habits, and pick out two or three pain points that touch you and implement them. This is enough. Don’t be greedy for more and create a situation like a model apartment, which will not feel like home.
